Review: A Midnight Dance

 A Midnight Dance

by Joanna Davidson Politano

About the Book

All theater romances are tragedies. Ella Blythe knows this. Still, she cannot help but hope her own story may turn out different than most –and certainly different than the tragic story of the Ghost of Craven Street Theater. Yet as she struggles to maintain her place in the ever-shrinking ballet company, win the attentions of principal dancer Phillipe, and avoid company flirt Jack, Ella cannot deny the uncanny feeling that her lifer is mirroring that of the dead ballerina.

Is she dancing ever closer to the edge of her own tragic end? Or will the secrets that are about to come to light offer release from the past?

Mystery and romance make the perfect dance partners in this evocative story from fan-favorite Joanna Davidson Politano.

My Thoughts

From a skilled hand comes a tale of loss, unrequited love, self-discovery, and grace set against the backdrop of Victorian England.

With her trademark style that has an ethereal quality, Joanna Davidson Politano takes us on another journey to Victorian England, this time to the world of ballet. Amid the soot stained streets of London, we are given a story filled with grace that is hauntingly beautiful.

Ella Blythe is a delightful heroine. She’s strong, dedicated, and intrepid. Her striving for perfection is something that I think we can all relate to. I cheered for her as she worked to uncover the truth about her mother and those around her.

The romance in this book is so achingly wonderful. Tender and hard-won, there are twists and turns that truly took me by surprise in a good way. While I won’t give away any spoilers, it truly is one of the most original romances I’ve read in a while. Mystery as well abounds in this book and truly kept me guessing up until the very end. It was so delightful.

The setting of this book was pitch perfect. The dark tones of the Victorian era are portrayed in an almost tangible way and the cut-throat and unforgiving theatre world fit within it perfectly.

A Midnight Dance is surely one of my favorite books of the year. Avid readers of historical fiction will love this book. Highly recommended!
